Traditional Number Mysticism: Chaldean, Pythagorean, and Abjad Traditions
Are numbers merely tools for quantitative calculation, or have they also been used throughout human history to make sense of the order of the universe and the deeper layers of texts? Across different eras—from the Babylonians to Ancient Greece and Eastern civilizations—many cultures have assigned symbolic meanings to numbers and letters.
The Chaldean Tradition and Babylonian Roots
Historically, the Chaldean numerical system is rooted in ancient Babylonian practices. This traditional approach laid the groundwork for textual analysis in Kabbalistic studies within Jewish mysticism, where Kabbalists explored recurring numerical patterns and symbolism in sacred texts.
Within the framework of spiritual beliefs, the appearance of repeating numbers such as 11.11 is associated with the concept of the Tetragrammaton, the four-letter divine name found in sacred scripture.
Pythagoras and Numerical Thought in Ancient Greece
The origins of letter-number correlation systems used today largely trace back to the teachings of the Ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras. Pythagoras did not limit himself to abstract mathematical solutions; he posited that a fundamental numerical order underlies the entire universe.
In the approach Pythagoras developed, specific correspondences were established between letters of the alphabet and whole numbers. The idea found in Hermetic thought and old traditions—that "the universe is ordered by the power of numbers"—shares historical parallels with Ancient Egyptian symbolism and the connection between the number 22 in Kabbalistic tradition and the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet.
Abjad Numerals in Eastern Tradition
In the cultural sphere of the Islamic world, the primary framework for number and letter mysticism is the Abjad system. The word "Abjad" is derived from the sequential reading of the first four letters of the traditional Arabic alphabet: Alif, Ba, Jim, and Dal.
The Abjad system assigns numerical values to letters using an alphabetical order. In traditional practices, this method was applied under the premise of searching for hidden symbolic meanings within texts by calculating the numerical totals of words, phrases, or passages.
