What Is Abjad Numerology? The Traditional Symbolism of Letters and Numbers

Are letters merely symbols for sounds, or do they carry an underlying numerical order? In Eastern traditions and the cultural sphere of Islam, studies exploring letter-number relationships are traditionally known as Abjad numerology (or ebced hesabı).

Where Does the Name "Abjad" Come From?

The word "Abjad" is derived from the pronunciation of the first four letters in the historical ordering of the Arabic alphabet: Alif, Ba, Jim, and Dal. This structure relies on an alphabetic numeral system where each letter is paired with a specific numerical value.

How the Abjad System Works

The Abjad method uses this alphabetic numeral system to calculate values. Through this approach:

• Words,
• Phrases,
• Or entire sentences have their total numerical values computed.

Based on these resulting numbers, various interpretations are made, helping scholars and practitioners draw subtle meanings from texts.

The Premise of Layered Meaning

This traditional practice rests on the premise that the analyzed words, phrases, or texts contain a hidden structure or implicit meaning. By forming numerical equations, one explores the symbolic connections lying beneath the visible text.
