Also known as: çay ağacı uçucu yağı · melaleuca alternifolia · tea tree essential oil
Tea Tree Essential Oil
A concentrated aromatic material from Melaleuca alternifolia, obtained from leaves and terminal branchlets. The commercial oil is obtained by water/steam distillation of leaves and terminal branchlets. Harvest, drying, distillation and origin can alter chemistry; CO₂ extracts, absolutes and infused oils are not this entity.
Botany and aroma
The source taxon should be verified as Melaleuca alternifolia (Myrtaceae). Plant part: leaves and terminal branchlets. Botanical name, plant part, process, origin and preferably batch analysis reduce identity errors. The profile is medicinal, fresh, terpenic. Characteristic volatiles may include terpinen-4-ol, gamma-terpinene and alpha-terpinene; proportions vary with chemotype, harvest, origin and processing. Chromatography is stronger identity evidence than odour copy alone.
History and culture
Australian Aboriginal plant knowledge preceded the twentieth-century commercial distillation industry; the oil is not related to tea beverage plants. This is ethnobotanical and scent history, not a treatment claim. Historical tea, spice, resin or smoke use does not give the concentrated oil the same dose or risk profile.
Spiritual context
Esoteric and aromatic traditions associate it with protective boundaries and purification rites. The recorded planetary correspondence is mars; this is historical-symbolic classification, not a measured physical effect.
Practical use and safety
Diffusion should create a brief, intermittent aroma in a ventilated room, not saturate the air. Stop if headache, nausea, cough or discomfort occurs, and allow children and animals to leave. Topical use requires an appropriate carrier and a purpose- and person-specific safe dilution. Assess tolerance on a small area, discard oxidised oil and follow material-specific dermal limits. No drop, ml or percentage recipe is given here.
Do not apply neat; avoid eyes, mucosa and broken skin. Oxygen, heat and light promote oxidation and may increase sensitisation risk; store cool in a small, dark, tightly closed bottle and discard oxidised oil. Ingestion, adding drops to food and self-treatment are not recommended.
