German Chamomile Essential Oil

A concentrated aromatic material from Matricaria chamomilla, obtained from flowers. The commercial oil is obtained by water/steam distillation of flowers. Harvest, drying, distillation and origin can alter chemistry; CO₂ extracts, absolutes and infused oils are not this entity.

Botany and aroma

The source taxon should be verified as Matricaria chamomilla (Asteraceae). Plant part: flowers. Botanical name, plant part, process, origin and preferably batch analysis reduce identity errors. The profile is herbaceous, sweet, warm. Characteristic volatiles may include chamazulene forms during distillation; bisabolol derivatives are important; proportions vary with chemotype, harvest, origin and processing. Chromatography is stronger identity evidence than odour copy alone.

History and culture

The blue colour is produced during distillation from matricin-related precursors, a key distinction from the living flower and Roman chamomile oil. This is ethnobotanical and scent history, not a treatment claim. Historical tea, spice, resin or smoke use does not give the concentrated oil the same dose or risk profile.
